The Process
From Questions to Architecture
Successful projects don’t begin with drawings. They begin with decisions.
Better Decisions before Better Drawings
A successful project doesn’t begin with a floor plan.
It begins by understanding why the project exists, what must it accomplish, who it must serve, and what could prevent it from succeeding.
The ESP Process establishes those decisions first, then uses them to guide design.
01 - Start the Conversation
Is there a fit?
Every project begins with a brief Project Fit Conversation.
We’ll discuss the project, its purpose, where you are in the process, and whether ESP Architects is the right partner to help move it forward.
No Design. No free consulting. Only determining whether we should continue the conversation.
Define the decisions before design begins.
Qualified projects move into an in-person Strategy Session.
Using the ESP Method and ESP Index, we’ll examine purpose, priorities, people, operations, risks, constraints, and what the success should actually mean for the investment.
Strategy First.
02 - Strategy Session
03 - Define
Turn strategy into direction.
The decisions established during strategy begin shaping the project.
We define the requirements, relationships, priorities, constraints, and opportunities that the design must respond to.
This is where the question changes from: “What should we build?” to “What should this investment accomplish?”
04 - Design
Give the decisions form.
Only after the project has direction do we begin translating strategy into architecture.
Plans, spaces, materials, systems, and experiences are evaluated against the decisions established earlier.
Because every line on paper represents a decision.
Design Second.
05 - Deliver
Protect the decisions through execution.
The work does not stop when the drawings are complete.
The decisions behind the project continue through documentation, coordination, permitting, construction, and ultimately, occupancy.
The object is not simply to deliver a building.
It is to deliver the outcome the project was created to achieve.
Success Always.
