At ESP Architects, those questions aren't something we work out after design begins.

They're where we start.

Because every line on paper represents a decision—and every decision either creates or destroys value.

WHY ESP EXISTS

A building can work and still be wrong.

It can meet code.
It can stay within budget.
It can get built exactly as drawn.

And it can still fail to serve the reason it was built.

ESP Architects was created around a different way of approaching architecture: understand the purpose before making the decisions that shape the building.

That means looking beyond individual rooms, materials, systems and costs to understand how those decisions work together.

A less expensive decision in one part of a project may create additional costs somewhere else.

A beautiful solution may interfere with operations.

Something that costs more today may create considerably more value over the life of the building.

There isn't always one universally “right” answer.

There is an answer that better serves the purpose.

WHY “ESP”?

Endurable. Sustainable. Placemaking.

ESP Architects began with an idea about the kind of buildings—and the kind of clients—I wanted to work with.

Endurable meant creating buildings intended to stand the test of time. Buildings should be expected to last for decades, not simply meet the needs of the day they open.

Sustainable meant more than energy efficiency. It meant being a good steward of resources—designing thoughtfully, avoiding unnecessary waste, and recognizing that the decisions we make today have consequences long after construction is complete.

Placemaking meant creating buildings and environments that serve the people who use them and contribute something meaningful to the places they occupy.

But buildings don't remain unchanged forever.

Owners change. Operations change. Technology changes. Communities change. A building may be renovated, expanded, reorganized, or eventually serve an entirely different purpose.

So flexibility matters.

A building designed around a clear understanding of its purpose today should also consider what it may be asked to become tomorrow.

That original idea—Endurable. Sustainable. Placemaking.—eventually grew into something larger.

It became a way of thinking about every decision we make.

What are we building? Why are we building it? Who does it serve? And will the decisions we make today continue to serve it tomorrow?

That's ESP Architects.

Architecture isn't a collection of independent choices.

Structure affects mechanical systems.
Operations affect space planning.
Staffing affects circulation.
Materials affect maintenance.
Construction decisions affect long-term ownership.
Budget decisions affect all of them.

That's why ESP Architects approaches projects by first understanding four things:

PURPOSE — Why does this project exist?

MISSION — What does the building need to accomplish?

PEOPLE — Who will use, operate, own and experience it?

ENVIRONMENT — What physical, financial and operational conditions shape the project?

Together, these become the foundation for the decisions that follow.

We call this the ESP Method.

ABOUT THE ARCHITECT

Experience changed the way I think about architecture.

I'm Jeffrey Hemphill, RA, founder of ESP Architects.

My career has put me on different sides of the same table—architecture, project management, construction and ownership conversations.

I've worked on multifamily and mixed-use developments, senior living environments, commercial projects, renovations and homes. I've managed projects where design decisions had to survive budgets, schedules, construction realities and the needs of the people actually using the building.

I'm also a Construction Engineer Technician with the Indiana Army National Guard and former Ironworker.

Those experiences reinforced something that eventually became fundamental to ESP Architects:

The drawing isn't the decision. It's the result of the decision.

The architect's value isn't simply knowing how to draw the building.

It's helping the people investing in that building understand the decisions they're making before those decisions become expensive to change.

ESP Architects is based in Lowell, Indiana, serving clients throughout Indiana, Illinois and Michigan, including Northwest Indiana, Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. Projects throughout the greater Midwest are considered based on project fit.
